I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

The people who work in the big cities like NYC and San Fran are def underpaid when considering cost of living. I could buy a house within 2 years of working if I worked in one of my firms Midwest towns because they pay such small rents for apartments and the houses are so cheap. We do get paid a bit more, but it's really just a drop of water when looking at the big picture.
I believe there's a "locality" adjustment based on your location, however, I don't think it's proportional to cost of living.
Phoenix is not the west coast
It varies by city and geography. I don't think there's enough of a gap to account for actual cost of living though. But that's just my opinion.
I was told by a recruiter it depends on market share.
I moved from Northeast to Southwest. They let me keep my higher salary when I transferred (right after senior promotion) but raises have been lower to "even it out."
Chicago and NYC salaries were the same for my start class at my school.
