Does working in biglaw make you feel empty sometimes? I work away from home (overseas) and I feel that the amount of hours I put into this job is making me lose time for myself and stifling meaningful connections with family and friends. The idea that im being forced to prioritize work to make clients and partners rich, at the expense of time with people who truly matter is depressing. Sorry it's a working weekend after a very stressful work week and im questioning my life choices

Let me put it this way: I retained no friendships from law school. Never had the time.

Thankfully reconnected with some of them when I was a senior associate at a different firm.

Never had time for hobbies etc. Became the absolute most boring version of myself.

This happens to a lot of lawyers, biglaw or not, that work at firms. All of my friends from law school who are still at biglaw firms say they essentially sold their soul, but biglaw is all that have/know. The ones who stayed the longest are either counsel/NEP and have trouble finding in house positions, and the very few that I know that became partners are completely immersed in their firm.

My clients are pushing back on it this year, and I can't say I blame them. If I were in their shoes, I'd rather take the risk of not filing than the expense of filing again. From my own point of view, I don't really want to spend my time on such returns, either, even if the revenue and easy return are nice.

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons.
