I have to as an assistant to dictate my working hours and to let people know that I will not respond to a instant message because I am away.

Because people believe they have a right to your time during the day and reduce others productivity. I’m introverted and on a team full of extroverts, it’s one of the best ways to have someone consolidate their thoughts and send an email instead of chopping up my working time

like

^This. It can be impossible to get work done if I get a message every 10 minutes

like

We have both teams and Skype, and I don’t want to get Skype messages, so I’m offline on Skype always but available on teams always

This is the right answer. Get out of the dark ages (Skype) and get onto Teams.

I’m home with sick child and put on away. I’m in and out so it tells people I will answer their message at some point but not right away.

They could be using a client machine to do their work

I’ll do it outside of normal 8-5 business hours If I’m working before 8 or past 5 its either because 1) I have a scheduled meeting and that deserves my attention or 2) I’m heads down on a deliverable and don’t want to be bothered. During normal hours though I think it makes sense to have it on accurately

like

They don’t want to be bothered by coworkers. I think it’s an annoying practice that makes teammates inaccesible for quick questions (when done during work hours, totally fine to do it for off-work hours)

Because I forgot

How do I deal with a super intense senior associate that is making life difficult? This associate sees no difference between 11 AM and 11 PM, weekend or weekday. They will text me on my personal cell instead of emailing, insist on long zoom calls during which they insist on turning camera on, won’t review anything I send them unless it’s on a zoom call (yes, that is crazy and not the norm at my firm), and is not a good team player (something good? He did it! bad? You did it)! What do I do?

Brutal 2 weeks. Weekend of work. SM micromanaging. Pick up someone's slack and they 🔨 your head. What is wrong with this people?

like

My boss loves to have every warm body possible in pitch meetings, even people who aren’t working on it. He will slack you out of the blue and expect you to drop everything to just sit there and make the team look “impressive.” Why are people like this? Don’t clients see right through it? Is it actually impressive to have 10+ people in the room if only half of them participate? 😑 it’s such a waste of everyone’s time.

Advice on how to encourage more from a team member that does the bare minimum? They often aren’t very responsive online and a simple task will go on for days with little improvement. This is an individual I’m managing from another consulting firm, so the dynamic is different than your typical team.. so I’m not totally sure if it’s even in my wheelhouse to reprimand when it’s warranted. For weeks now I’ve been picking up the slack. My personality is not to be a hard-ass Manager. Help!

This has been on my mind for a few weeks, and I have to get it off my chest: Via slack, did you PING him? Or did you PANG him? Heard someone say PANG one time and now I’m lost…

Friend wants to join consulting for the pay. I don’t believe she has the aptitude or energy for it. We worked together in a much slower industry, and even there she complained of being overworked. I’ve sent her resources to polish up her resume and links for roles but she’s insisting on texting/long phone calls asking silly questions. Today she wants a resume review over zoom! She comes without having done her homework. How do I tell her I’ve given as much as I can? How do I decline referring?

Advice to young lawyers. Read a book. I saw the thread about savings and many young lawyers (20s and 30s) don’t know how to open up a brokerage account or invest in their 401k. I know they don’t teach personal finance in school (though they should!), but my advice is that you should go to your local library and read a book about the subject. You have the skills necessary but you must invest in yourself. No one will look out for you.

I’m a partner at a small firm looking to lateral. Many firms that were beyond my reach a year ago are now eager to pick me up. Firms that I should be selling myself to are instead selling their firm to me. (And I am a very confident person; no imposter syndrome here.) Is there some larger diversity push going on? Is it hard for bigger firms to retain female partners? Curious what the market is.
