I have to as an assistant to dictate my working hours and to let people know that I will not respond to a instant message because I am away.
Because people believe they have a right to your time during the day and reduce others productivity. I’m introverted and on a team full of extroverts, it’s one of the best ways to have someone consolidate their thoughts and send an email instead of chopping up my working time
^This. It can be impossible to get work done if I get a message every 10 minutes
We have both teams and Skype, and I don’t want to get Skype messages, so I’m offline on Skype always but available on teams always
This is the right answer. Get out of the dark ages (Skype) and get onto Teams.
I’m home with sick child and put on away. I’m in and out so it tells people I will answer their message at some point but not right away.
They could be using a client machine to do their work
I’ll do it outside of normal 8-5 business hours If I’m working before 8 or past 5 its either because 1) I have a scheduled meeting and that deserves my attention or 2) I’m heads down on a deliverable and don’t want to be bothered. During normal hours though I think it makes sense to have it on accurately
They don’t want to be bothered by coworkers. I think it’s an annoying practice that makes teammates inaccesible for quick questions (when done during work hours, totally fine to do it for off-work hours)
