Due to ongoing shortages, I’ve considered asking for an increase in my dosage of Vyvanse (currently at 20mg, would ask for 40mg) with the intent of taking one dose (40mg) every other day instead of one dose (20 mg) every day and hoping the increased strength will carry over into days I take nothing. This way I’m only taking half a month’s amount and giving myself a buffer from month-to-month. Anyone tried this strategy (for Vyvanse or any other med)? Did it work for you?

This isn’t how meds work. Ask for a 90 day script.

like

Nope. You can do 90, I have been. You cant get 30 day with refills, but they will fill a 90.

Yeah, this isn’t how these meds work. The daily dose is supposed to last long enough to get you through the day. You’re just going to be wired out on double the dose. I highly doubt your doc will double the dose just like that.

Skip weekends so you have some left over before your script can be filled.

like

You will be strung out for 12 hours (or however long Vyvanse lasts for you) and then will experience a nasty come down when you are supposed to be sleeping. There is a dopamine sweet spot, and doubling your dose might kick you out of the ideal range and worsen concentration. You could always get 40 mg and then just literally sprinkle half of the pill into your mouth and then save the other half for the next day.

like

Can you cut a pill in half? That’s what I’ve done with my adderrall on occasion. If it’s a gelatin capsule with powder in it, you can buy some more of the gelatin capsules and then just split the medicine between two pills.

like

I used to do that with Adderall. Vyvanse doesn’t come in that form, though - it’s in capsule form. Supposed to be not as easy to abuse.

Or ask for your 40mg dose to be prescribed as a 20mg dose where you take 2 pills

like

I get more than I need of a stronger dose and then take half a pill. Then (shortage issues permitting) I will always fill it as soon as insurance allows - even if I still have a supply. But, even with these strategies, I’ve still had to ask for odd doses to be prescribed on occasion to accomplish the doses that the pharmacy had in stock (among other shortage related pharmacy hacks).

My dr typically calls in for a 60ct instead of 30ct of my pills. in PA you can’t get a 90 day Rx for controlled substances

I think that Pennsylvania has eased up on Schedule 2 drug prescriptions.
I used to be limited to 30-day supplies of my Ritalin ER, but now I can get a 90-day supply of Ritalin via my PA mail-order pharmacy. (I have to sign for the UPS package, and I must get a new prescription each quarter, but it's still better than having to get 12 distinct scripts per year -- especially given that I have ... ADHD.)

It may be worth reaching out to your pharmacy and physician about this.

like

My doc made my prescription to be twice a day rather than once a day so I got extra pills but kept the same dosage. That’s a better solution if your doc is willing to do it so you can have a buffer.

I finally broke down and went back on HRT last week. I have been taking gabapentin for a nerve injury which I’ve learned helps hot flashes. I can’t tell a significant difference yet aside from maybe getting a little better sleep. I saw a new doctor (male) to get my prescription refilled and he seems to have a different philosophy than my last doctor (female). He wants me to be on HRT until 51, but after that he doesn’t recommend it. I hope by that age I’ll be off the gabapentin…
