Fellow Fishes -

How did you all deal with failure in your career. I was ambitious and smart. I was in IBM and considered to be one of the best of my class. I was fired and haven’t really found my way.

I don’t know what to do anymore. 3 years after the fact, I am still at an entry level position. I hate myself for letting things get this bad but I don’t know how to get out of this perpetual cycle. I tried working my ass off but have not been able to shake off that unfortunate past.

Hey management consultant - I was in a bad work environment and knew it right away it wasn’t a skill set/ environment fit. I worked like a slave to make it work for 7 months. I was terminated. Venture capital firm fired me and the CEO To clean house. It’s ok. Learn from your failures but let them go. There’s thousands of companies in this country. You will find your right fit. Let go of the failures and forgive yourself

Let go of failures and forgive yourself is amazing advice. Thank you!

Get some therapy/counseling to help you cope. Your situation isn't as simple as "just find a new job" and will take years to recover from. I was an ivy degree who felt on top of the world then switched firms and got counseled out, and professional help was necessary and helpful.

One part of this is recognising that your path was never going to be linear, and it’s not a race. There are plenty of thing you can learn from you experience, although I am sorry you or anyone has to live in an abusive work relationship.

The second thing to recognise is that you don’t owe your company anything. Leave if you’re not learning and growing. It doesn’t matter if you job hop a little to find the right team - in the long run, it won’t even matter.

What caused you to be fired? Is it similar to the issues you're having now?

In addition to what other said (especially D2), I want to add - you should talk to someone who knows you or your work closely. Also, have a regular touch point with your lead. Pay close attention to what they say, take notes and review. Once the remote work ends, you should be able to connect with the people, just hang in there for few more months.

OP consider changing your perspective at work. Instead of investing yourself into it (your energy, emotions, aspirations) treat it as a task to be done and when the day is over forget about it completely. Perform the function of your job but be detached from the outcome so your work performance loosens its emotional grip on you. This will free your energy and allow you to make the right decisions for you without the corporate environment dictating your self worth. Weirdly enough, when I stopped caring at all, my results improved markedly with far less burnout.

I guess I am a little embarrassed about having to start over. Part of my mind is fixated on sunk costs.

I suppose acceptance is the first step and forgiveness. Learned everything from college but that.

You were fired for "unprofessional behavior"?

Took 2 days PTO/ sick days after pulling long shifts. The project was over and I wanted some break. I was tired.

The response to this wasn’t the best.

I applied for a role a few days ago and found the relevant hiring manager today via LinkedIn. Should I send a follow up mail/introduce myself to this person. Would it leave a good impression or come across as desperate?

Btw, the person is in a “Talent Acquisition” position at the company.

Anyone go from SaaS / licensing sales to services (strategy & implementation) sales?

I'm thinking of moving from large cap tech to large cap consultancy firm to help build the resume and round out my experience. I enjoy and do well in licensing, but I'm fairly young in my career (<6 years) and received a great offer to make the move.

Big fan of the org and team I'll be joining as well.

Thanks!!

I grew up with a lot of social anxiety so I can't really believe I'm saying this, but my favorite thing about working at a store is that I have to talk to people every day. It's really helped me come "out of my shell" and stepping outside of my comfort zone has given me more confidence than I ever thought it would.
