Folks who have passed the PMP exam: how hard is the exam? How much time did you spend preparing? Any tips or resources that would be helpful? Thanks!!

It's not hard at all. Pure memorization. I read the book "how to pass the pmp on your first try" once and did some practice tests over 2 weeks. Passed easily. I also really recommend that book.

like

Read the book and did a training course (paid by employer). Dont think PMP is worth it and wouldnt do it again.

like

Read the rita mulcahey book. Head first was for 5th edition pmbok, test is 6th edition now. Recommend a course if your employer pays for it.

like

Thanks M1. Did you also read the guide published by PMI? The PMBOK? Trying to see if it's worth a lot of time as they say.

like

Test is hard. 4hours. That said, I passed the first attempt and know many that did not.
Some will swear by boot camps etc however, they are hit and miss.

I read Head First PMP, did the work, did the practice exams and passed. Excellent book!

Suggest you brain dump formulas etc on your scratch paper when you begin the test so you don’t have to dig back in your brain to find it.

PMBOK Guide is a reference and is not helpful in passing the exam.

Good luck!

PMP is worth it for fed work if you are getting a shot at leadership. Project Manager LCATs typically require it and they are usually one of (if not) the highest paid. If you are technical or don’t see yourself running a contract then not worth it. Check out /r/pmp for lots of recommendations on how to pass.

like

Not terribly hard. I read head first PMP start to finish. Spent maybe 3 weekends studying. Read a chapter a night during weekdays. It’s all memorization. I took 3 practice tests. Make sure you’re getting 70%+ on practice before taking the real thing. Good luck

like

Do not waste your time reading the PMBOK

like

I only read PMBoK. Its the most boring material I have read in my life. But I read it in 4 days and passed.

Same as D3. I think if you’re 70% passing on the practice exam then you’re ready for the test

Also did your test have lots of math equations?

Practice is key. Also read PMBOK inside out. Test is not easy. Prep for it. 4 hrs, no break. I almost thought I flunked after 7 of the 200 question lol Deloitte question database for practice exams

If you have done all phases of a project before (including initiation and closeout), then all you really need to do is memorize the PMBOK terms for everything (your firm/clients might have different names for things) and you will pass it.

M1: what do you suggest then? The latest edition of Head First is going to get released on Sept 16. Any other recommendations? Thanks

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
