I don't think anyone should be given a priority for a schedule. I think that creates an unequal work environment. I think that if people with children are unavailable to work the hours that are needed, then they may want to pursue another job where the company isn't open 7 days a week or at night.
But if everyone has a need-eventually: what if I need a restructured schedule to provide elder/spousal care? Or prolonged medical treatments? I suspect those needing childcare scheduling allowances could veto those considerations.
Sounds like the employer that implements a policy like this is looking to be fined for unfair and direct practices in the workplace…

Your choice to procreate or not should not be a determining factor in a work schedule.
As somebody with kids, I don’t need priority, I just need to know that the schedule I’m being offered is the actual schedule. I’ve worked jobs where leaving at 3 turned into oh, we need this and that. Absolutely not, cannot stand that. I just need quitting time to be just that.
No one should be given priority. Workplaces often lean heavily on unmarried workers and workers without children for the less desirable hours. It’s not appropriate. Navigating childcare for the job is part of the job. You can ask workers if anyone has preferences for certain schedules, and if there are days and hours no one wants, divide those hours equitably and give employees as much notice as possible so they have time to arrange for childcare.
If it's possible, employees with families should be given preference for a Mon-Fri schedule. This makes sense because the kids and the spouse are also off on weekends. If the company also has 24-hour operation, that does not mean all employees with family can get 8-5 shifts. The problem comes when there are too many family-employees or too-few single employees to fill a shift. I realize this looks like discrimination based on domestic status, but it is also taking into account how many other people are affected by this decision. This is not the kind of thing a company can have written down as policy, but it something a manager should be able to consider when drawing up work schedules. The manager has the authority to make schedules, so should have the discretion to use whatever factors needed to reach that decision.

What if I’m single and child-free by choice but prefer to spend my nights and weekends with close family and friends who work Mon-Fri 8-5? If parental status status takes priority then I’m left having to pick between work and family.
Should marital status and/or someone’s choice to have (or not have) children really be a factor? I’d argue that my free time away from the office is of equal value to that of someone who is married with children.
As a parent. No.
