Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

That is beyond the stupidest idea ever. Did you go to the Michael Scott school of management?
Don’t turn layoff decisions into some sort of Big Brother episode. You’re the leader of your group and sometimes you have to makes these tough decisions. That’s your job and responsibility. Don’t flip it around and put in on your employees. They’ll hate each other and you in the process.
there's more to consider than popularity
What you propose is one of the big problems with out industry- it IS, in fact, a popularity contest. So many incompetent yet ingratiating, gregarious people in top positions. All while talented introverts get pushed aside.
What I’m saying is that the holding company folks do not have a ground view as to who their best employees and most valued staff are. they are allowing people on executive teams to keep their jobs and pass the layoffs down. When in many cases those executives should be the first to exit. It’s amazing how many EVP people whom the clients don’t know or like are staying while their day-to-day partners are being kicked out.
