Dont give hr as a ref - give the higher in rank you trust. Consulting is very much of a gray zone - they will mostly believe what your ref is saying. Take advantage of the broken model

End date. They will not share any details. Often is done by a third party provider (the work number)
HR will provide the title and the end date when you worked last and that is it.

So I recently went through a background check. I requested the background check copy be sent to me upon completion. B4 responded to a screening company something along the lines of “Per the company policy, B4 is not allowed to disclose the reasons for resignation”

Been in Big 4 HR at all 4firms. This is how it works--
They use The Work Number for job verification; they only give start date, end date, last role title. They never say why you are no longer there.
You can give whatever reason you want on your resume or in conversation about why you left, nobody can prove you're lying unless they know a specific leader you reported to.
Your HR mgr is not involved in employment checks at all. Neither is your RL or your coach or your partner.
Yup Big4s play hard to reach during background checks and they term exits as termination regardless of layoff or voluntary exit.
I was let go from big 4 years ago. They asked what happened, I said they downsized (which wasnt untrue). Then immediately focus on what your excited for at the new company your interviewing for.

You learn how to change your story based on your audience. You’ll fail a few times with the first few recruiters, but having big 4 on your resume is nothing to scowl at no matter what you see/read on fishbowl— and you’ll have plenty of other opportunities to improve your “I got fired speech”.
