For those who are in touch with your old school mates (HS/College/University)how do you navigate the feeling that they are doing better than you careerwise? Even though I love my job and enjoy what I do, talking about my career as an EA sometimes makes me feel less accomplished than my contemporaries, most of whom are now in middle-management or even top-management roles?

you are accomplished in your own way! i agree it's not easy to not compare and feel like an EA is any less, but it isnt! We do so much and others dont understand the job. if you love what you do then keep holding onto that and no one can take it away from you :)

Thank you for the encouragement

Whose to say whos is more accomplished. I've long ago stopped thinking of myself as "just" an admin. I run the place, and everyone knows it. I learned a hard lesson when I was younger when an ex went to work at a gas station. I had certain feelings about it and thought he could do better. But he actually liked it there. And he had a job. Who am I to look down at that. Sure, I've got a friend with a PhD. in Psychology. You know what, I know for a fact my annual salary is more than hers. But monetary factors aren't also what defines success for me. I'm extremely happy. I have an MBA and could move to different areas, but I enjoy my work. And I'm darn good at it, too. It's all about perspective for me and owning my own worth. Once I see my own value, others will, too. And if they don't? Well, I feel sorry for them.

like

I'm really glad you've reached such a level of self-actualization.
I hope I get to this point someday.

Good question...following. though I KNOW accomplishments are not me defined. I have so many other accomplishments and positive things. Ive faced so much adversity and Im GRATEFUL for even an EA job, i do feel a little less successful than others who hv been directors and I know I certainly had the same skills and ability...but due to a lot of being in the wrong place, etc 'stuff happened' and things didnt happen for me. Its a hard call. Im interested in hearing what others say.

like

This is exactly how I feel. I'm grateful but I often wonder if I would be in a different place if certain things in my life had happened differently. Cos I know I have the same, if not better skills and abilities, I just had to make different choices.

Not to turn this into a religious discussion, but I heard this scripture quoted years ago and it jumped straight into my mind when I read your post. It really struck a chord in me, so I made a note of it not only for myself but for others who are feeling like they are not as good as others:

“But let each one examine his own actions, and then he will have cause for rejoicing in regard to himself alone, and not in comparison with the other person. 5 For each one will carry his own load.” (Galatians 6:4, 5). That was written almost 2,000 years ago and self confidence was a struggle for people back then as much as it is for us today.

We might look at someone else and think they are doing better than us, but you are only seeing an illusion from the outside colored by your feelings about yourself. You have to live with the decisions that you make, and they have to live with the decisions that they make. If you were a stay at home, mom and your kids are kind, intelligent and well adjusted, that is success! Do your best and make the decisions that are best for you and don’t worry about what other people are doing. If they seem to be doing well and have found, success, be happy for them, congratulate them, and if they aren’t doing well, be of encouragement to them. Remember at the end of the day it’s not someone’s title that makes them a good person. It’s how they conduct themselves in their daily lives.

And finally, resist the urge to play down what you do. I can’t tell you how many people on my teams have told me, “there’s no way I could do what you do every day. I would lose my mind!“ Our executives and our teams depend on us every day. Do not ever tolerate anyone saying, you are “just” an admin, including yourself.

Do recruiters and Hiring Managers actually review and read resumes? Also tech companies that sell SaaS, what is it with the requirements of having 10 years or more if technical sales experience? Also the ramp up period is not realistic. Average sales cycle for a reputable SaaS provider is 12-24 months. How on earth a start up can state that their ramp up period is 90 days? The company hasn’t had any new sales either. Start up CEO’s… be realistic or seek enough funding to operate.

Taxpayers are abused the most in this country across the globe. It’s frustrating to see that only 1.5% of Indian population pay direct income tax, still govt. is milking them like anything and unable to do anything for these taxpayers. I’m paying 1 lakh tax every month, and what’s my return, 🔔🔔🔔,

If a tax payer loses his job , govt. is not even paying even few thousands for unemployment allowance, who have been paying lacs to government as tax. What’s your thoughts on Indian taxation?

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

Has anyone else had a mentor (assigned to them by the Company) who seemed to have it out for you? I mean downright sabotage to make you look bad left and right. I didn’t realize it at first.
