I’ve moved roles within a company, and if you can manage it, that is the best way. You retain your work reputation and relationships, which can make the imposter syndrome easier to manage. Your new manager knows your transferable skills, and usually the ramp time is shorter since you already know the company/product/etc. My advice is to be transparent in your worries, and to ask for clear milestones for your first 60 days so you know what goals to hit. Do your homework and meet your new team and be sure to ask questions. Keep in mind that they hired YOU for the role, so keep being yourself and you’ll be great.
I was voluntold to switched from hardware test to hardware reliability. Even though you work on the exact same products, hardware reliability is a whole different beast and I wasn’t sure if I had the technical knowledge to do the job.
It worked out pretty well in the end though, my new manager was also a really good professor so he knows how to teach the concepts.
I transitioned from ops to product management this year and have had a great experience. I recommend thinking through why you are making that transition and why you are set up to succeed in the role. For areas that you are less confident about, seek out ways to grow your comfort and confidence. Showing that you are invested in developing your skills goes a long way and ultimately allows you to develop your current skill set you are bringing to the role.
Growing at the same company meant having context that an external hire would not have, meaning I would think of yourself as an asset to the position.
If the motivations align, I say go forward with it.
I haven’t done it, but the wonderful thing about this is that if it doesn’t work out you know exactly where you can return without any consequences.
I got turned down for 4 internal roles in 2020 so decided to leave my Employer. I say got for it. It’s a tremendous opportunity. I’ve done it at only one prior company and thought they to be the best employer since they actually saw something in me.
