Got a random email from a supposed Amazon recruiter for a SDE position (which is not at all a fit). The email is amazon.com domain and there are no red flags in the body but it doesn't feel like an Amazon recruiter due to the tacky signature, etc. Has anyone seen this kind of cold-calling from FAANG recruiter?

You are brief. And believable. And you will be beloved (have confidence, you will be). And then you move on. Some suggestions:
1. New leadership, they wanted their own team & people.
2. New leadership, it was no longer a good fit.
3. I was laid off as part of a large restructuring and an exit it my role/department.
4. I left because I no longer wanted to be a consultant, and wanted to devote myself to finding my next path, giving the search the time it deserves.

Background checks only verify you were employed there, at most dates
I mean don’t tell a brazen lie, but there are creative ways to maneuver that question without saying, oh I got fired
Laid off: no stigma, it happens, own it. Counseled out: I’d be awfully hesitant to admit that (but I’d also have found a new gig long before I was actually forced out) Fired for cause: just cross your fingers they aren’t diligent about checking references
So it's true that PwC is laying off? Coming to your q - it's always better to be honest with prospective employer as you never know what background check will bring up. You don't need to give the reason but you can be honest.
Build off of sc1 and bring it back to why you want to join the company you’re interviewing with, what are you looking forward to should you be able to join them
I said it was restructuring, the whole division got axed from V.P to me, so it wasn’t indicative of my performance being negative
A caveat - Your company doesn’t give out reason for departure in this case
You make up the best story possible - I lost passion for what I was doing and I needed to take some tome and focus on my career etc
I think the creative reason you give has to consider the role for which you’re interviewing. Also depends on the the city - some are small enough that your chances of being exposed are uncomfortably high, others allow more anonymity. I don’t believe your former employer would volunteer that you were counselled out if the question was asked in the context of a background check. Former employers don’t talk about these things, but individuals do. Good luck
KPMG1: mind sharing the creative way?
Kpmg1, OP said laid off, not fired
“The & was actually layoffs"
They decided to go in a different direction
OP, what practise? They say why?
