In my experience, whenever I've agreed to reduce my rate, I ended up getting screwed. Sometimes it was simply my fault for not anticipating how much work the project would actually entail. Other times (most times, honestly), it was because the types of clients who are looking for the best deal are almost always the ones who nitpick everything. Either way, you end up putting more work in and ultimately working for pennies. Approach at your own risk, but just be sure you aren't selling yourself short.
Spot on CW1. Every time I’ve lowered my rate I’ve regretted it.
I often cut my rate for smaller shops, knowing they have smaller budgets. But it’s a personal decision and need to be comfortable with the lower rate, both mentally and financially. For me, going from 1k to 800/day would be acceptable, if it was a good opportunity. Maybe it’s 900 or 700 for you, as there are factors beyond money to consider.
