Got an offer letter from Walmart Inc., at Bentonville. The job description said the range is $70K - $130K. And they offered me $90K saying this is even higher and wouldn’t get approved. Apparently it did. I got very similar strong experience for the role. I was expecting well around $100K, should I negotiate on this? How would you handle it? I acknowledge the job market is bad, and Arkansas is comparatively cheap. Seeking advice.

I've been unemployed for just shy of 6 months, I have only had two interviews in that time, and Ive seen several others share similar experiences, some being on the job hunt even longer. Our house goes on the market on Friday, and I would much rather have an offer that's 10% low to accept rather than having to uproot my family to be able to put food on the table.

Given the strong language already used, I personally would accept the offer, though if I was in a position to be picky and didn't need the job I'd ask for $110k and see if they'd come up to $100k. FWIW employers know that they have the upper hand, and you are likely not the only strong candidate they've talked to.

Hey, I am genuinely sorry for you. I have been unemployed for 9 months. The job market is beyond bad. I know I got quite lucky, after interviewing whole process for 5 positions and got rejected after the final stage, along with thousand rejections upon applying.

I hope you'll find your best match of a job and your house will be saved too!

Tbh I’d take it if it’s something you’re looking for and can always keep looking if needed

like

If they’re giving you an offer letter it means they want you. I’d ask for 110 or 120 and take the counter offer. - worst they can say is no, and decide then if you want to work for a company that lowballs like that and doesn’t respect your worth.

I applied for a job ranging from 90k-130k. With my experience i asked for $140k. They said they were preapproved up to $130k. I stood my ground. Held my team interviews, got the preemptive verbal offer for $130k. I pushed back, 3 days later got the full offer of $140k

Yes, i survived 4 layoffs in the span of 2022-2026. Also i am an nyc hybrid employee so payband is slightly higher than Arkansas like the OP

Negotiating salary works 6 out of 10 times, has no effect 3 out of 10 times and backfires 1 out of 10 times. Can you afford to risk the 1 out of 10 bad outcomes is the question

like

I’d maybe politely ask at least once for more with justification about your skills/experience and see what they say. If not more money, then you can ask for other things - more bonus or whatever else is important to you.

like

Well it’s good that you tried! And congrats on the offer!

Is this for the executive technical support ?

like

No, it is Data Analyst position

like

Id definitely shoot for at least mid-range and give solid reasoning as to why you should be at that amount. You got an offer so they want to hire you. Most hiring managers will have some wiggle room on salary. Worst they say is 'no'. I'd be willing to bet they would come up closer to the 100k mark with good reasoning on your end.

like

They did not accept any negotiation, so I just accepted it. They told me that there is other candidates they would offer more because they had more experience if I do not accept the offer.

like

Walmart is a great company , I would have accepted the offer and then try to make a hike within next 6 months

like

I’ve worked at Walmart Headquarters. You can ask for 100k to start. But they do (at least while I was there) offer bonuses, pension, 401k, stocks, and raises across every department; which a lot of companies forego these days. I would say accept what they offer to just get your foot in the door. And as you said, Bentonville is affordable, so even at 90k you be able to afford a house there.

like

Then congratulations. As one commenter said if the job market wasn’t so horrible you could probably had room to negotiate but at least you got the job. It’s been a year since I’ve been out of work and been lowering my salary expectations to at least get an interview. Hopefully they still offer decent raises, bonuses, pension. All the best!!

like

My advice:

The strength of your position in a negotiation is based off of how much leverage you have.

Do you have other offers?
How much do they need you vs you need them?
Are you prepared to walk away from the table?

The best position to be in is where they are trying to convince you to work for them. Not the other way around.

The best way to ensure you are in that position is by taking away their leverage and fortifying your own.

One way of doing that is by applying to as many places as you can and gathering as many offers as you can.

Also, if a place asks you what salary you are expecting in the beginning.

Always shoot above what they are offering. Set the standard high and play the game from there.

What are the benefits that come with the base?

like

Will this be a stepping stone for your career? Can you afford your lifestyle on $90K? If yes for both, take it. This job market doesn't have insanely high salaries anymore.

That doesn't sound bad at all. If you get upper end, you aren't getting promoted, and you get no raise, and you will be miserable. Here, you get more than the starting rate; it's a new role for you with a global company, so you can be looking elsewhere within the company while earning decent money. Walmart isnt known for throwing money at people so in this market, CONGRATS! :)

Clawback clause in current contract: been in role for over 2 yrs, it was an internal move that required relocation. Relocation was approved shortly after (over 2 yrs ago) but covid meant the actual move and start of my contract with new subsidiary was delayed, I was paid by the previous subsidiary meanwhile. I got small relocation package. Would internal move be subject to a buy-out/clawback clause if I leave now and if yes, is it time in role or time under new contract? Any experience? Thanks!

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?
