I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

If you have lukewarm feelings about it, don’t take it.
I know not everyone can afford to be picky with job offers because of bills or other financial responsibilities, so take that into consideration as well. But getting a new offer in 2 weeks is an insanely quick turnaround, and you can absolutely do it again with a gig you actually feel excited about! If you’re able to financially / mentally hold out for a little longer, it’s better to wait for the better fit to come. Because it will.
This.
Um that’s a yes. Door closing door opening thing. Staring you right in the face.
You could get more out of a great lead at an okay palace than an okay lead at your dream place. A great lead can coach and mentor you, get you ready for promotions more quickly, and make sure you are doing quality work. You don’t have to stay forever.
Sorry to hear that. Hang in there.
You could take it, knowing you'll potentially leave if one of these dream companies has an offer for you. Or you could turn it down, knowing you might have to wait for a while for an offer or potentially not get one at all. With the recession and the economy in a downturn, it's a hard decision to make. If you have some savings, I might wait for more offers to come in before taking this first one. If not, at least you can work under someone good while you wait on other opportunities!
As a fellow strat person who went through the exact same thing, don’t stop the process and if they’re interested keep talking. Jobs are being snipped and budgets may change next quarter. But you have to be willing to take a leap (and risks) with it. Sleep on it and make your pro’s and con’s to figure out what you really want. Talk about your decision to somebody else before you make it official. If you have to fake it and your current gig feels safe but limited it may not be it. Ask yourself if you accept one over the other, will you be in the same boat 6 months from now wishing you’d taken those interviews? Hope that helps.
