Sorry to hear that.... I’ve been there and you’ll get through it.
If they still need you to finish up projects or stay on for a particular amount of time you might have some leverage... otherwise you should check laws in your area. I believe 2 weeks per years worked is standard.
I was laid off just before the holidays years ago. While I had a lot of practical things to worry about, it was strange and wonderful to spend time with family without the dark cloud of work hanging over me. It was a nice Christmas and everything worked itself out the following year. Just prepare yourself for change: a move to a different city, a shift in career, etc.
Very sorry to hear. YESYESYES, negotiate! They would rather pay you extra than have to deal with potential lawsuits or bad PR. Dont sign anything. Theyll tell you you wont get severance unless you sign. Tell them thank you and you prefer to show it to your lawyer first. Then get back to them 1-5 days later (even if you dont talk to anyone) and tell them its not enough. Its the holidays, you feel it undervalues what you contributed, etc. Then give them a specific number. Worst they can do is say no.
Yes! Don't sign anything and always negotiate! I have had luck in extending both severance and healthcare.
Nothing is set in stone
Can’t hurt to try. What did they offer you? Are you in a protected class?
Also, I’m sorry. It’s happened to the best of us. Head up, march forward.
please tell us which agency did it (or at least which holding company) so we all know which agencies are the biggest bastards...
I’ve never had success negotiating severance but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try
I think it's a total dick move to do layoffs before agency holidays but HR can justify it for the reasons you state. However, the real reason is that they don't want to pay you for the extra time off.
On the flip side, I’d rather be laid off before spending a ton of money than after.
Either way it blows. I’ve been laid off and I’ve laid people off. It always sucks.
If you were targeted for age, gender, etc lawyer up.
Don’t sign anything yet. Lawyer.
Will severance pay your mortgage?
It’ll pay 2 months rent.
Very sorry to hear that! Which agency?
Everything is a negotiation including vacation time. If you’re a protected class (female, person of color or over 40) you have some leverage. Use it! Don’t sign anything on the day of.
Good looks
It should be in your employee handbook
Negotiating takes time. If you can afford it do it, but might take more time. Curious - did you get a week per year? I was laid off from ipg a couple years ago only got 11 weeks for 11 years. I needed the money - so I just took it father than fighting for more. Threw me into a really bad post. Was expecting much more for my level and position. Got screwed.
Tizz the Season.
Get a lawyer you like to review it for trade. You can look at their site, write/design an email etc. Contact me if you want to talk about picking up some freelance. Or just to talk. We need to be there for each other.
I’m going to DM you! Thank you!
Don’t sign until you speak to a severance lawyer .
As others have said, severance is always a negotiation. But you do have to decide whether the juice is worth the squeeze. If you are not far apart, or feel there is more to be had, offer to sell your prompt signature. As in, “if you up severance from X weeks to X + 2, I’ll sign the document today. If not, I’ll take the full 45-90 days allowed by law to consider the offer, and I’ll definitely run it past a lawyer.” Makes it worthwhile to give u a little more. But if the offer is basically fair, it’s an empty threat and hence, probably won’t work.
Lawyer will ask if you had a contract, otherwise it is about negotiation and their goodwill.
I am very sorry- happened to me last year at this time as well. Try to focus to put all energy to search in January, Dec is a bad time. SOW’s are locked in January so keep the faith.
Thanks everyone for the info on here. All very helpful (varied, but helpful).
One more question: can I get unemployment if I get a severance? I’m in NYC.
No problem, OP. Happened to me a couple of years ago, that’s how I know. Best of luck, and hope it all works out.
