It depends how far apart you are. If it’s more than $10K off, I think you have to let the recruiter know.
It’s not written in stone. If they want you badly enough after the interviews, they could meet the number. There’s no rule that states, “well you took the interview, at that salary price, so you have to take that.” That would be complete garbage.
So, a recruiter gets a cut from placing you. The agency sets the salary range.
The recruiter does not set the salary range. So if you asked for more, the recruiter could just go back to the agency and say something like, “they want more, can you go higher?”
If you want more, you ask for more. That’s the only way. After your interviews, ask the recruiter for a higher range, but not an exact number. For example:
“I saw that the salary for the position was listed at XXX, but I am looking for something in the XXX to XXX range.“
The recruiter might come back with:
“This is already at the top end of what the agency is willing to pay for the position”
And then you can say something like,
“Ok, so let’s talk alternate ways of compensation to get me to that range. I’m open to a signing bonus of X or a relocation package of X.”
Those X numbers should be the difference in what you were looking for to get you to that number you want. Get it! Let them know what you want, no matter how reluctant the recruiter makes you feel. “Hmmm, I don’t know if they’ll go that high.” Is something they might say, and then you will be the strong person you are and you’ll have to say something like, “well that’s unfortunate.”
Let them meet you in the range you gave the recruiter. If they can’t, then ask for a “moving stipend” or “signing bonus” to get you there. Sometimes it’s easier for an agency to fork over a separate check for 10k than to give you a contract salary of 10k higher.
I’m now repeating myself and I apologize.
It comes down to how desperate you are at the moment, and if you’re willing to walk away from the opportunity or not.
Up to you. But ALWAYS ask for what you’re worth and never be sorry about it. 💪🏼
THANK YOU for this :’)
I’ll take it.
I mean, that's kinda between you and your bills, isn't it?
They didn't mention it not being market value. Just that it was less than they'd wanted.
