RSM is a career downgrade in and of itself anyways
I reiterated what I said before. He then asked me what the “minimum, like the absolute lowest” I would take would be. I reiterated my range. He said he wants me to talk to a few more people and said “we’d still need to work on the numbers a bit”.
Am I crazy or is this a huge red flag?? I don’t think I want to work somewhere that flat out asks me what’s the least we can get you
Pro
That’s a huge red flag. They’re essentially saying they don’t value you enough to pay you what you’re worth and want to get you for the cheapest rate possible. And once you start, they’ll probably overwork you. Find something else
Just made the switch from D to RSM- really gotta push for the number you want as you have the power in the situation. Another piece to consider is working hours (at least in my experience) have been much better at RSM so there is a small trade off in pay (relative to big 4s) to go along with that.
All that said you know your worth so if they don’t hit your number don’t take it!

Probably one of those partners that operates more as a sleazy sales guy more so than a professional services thought leader.
That’s what I was thinking! Like I’m sure those conversations take place behind the scenes but they usually have the good sense to funnel it through the recruiter during negotiations.
Thanks guys! I’m definitely going to pass. Not to mention, he literally asked me if I’d be willing to relocate to another state minutes after I told him I JUST bought a house lol.
That's probably just a bad interviewer rather than a red flag for RSM, unless he is the head of the practice you're interviewing for. Interviewers are typically coached to leave all compensation discussions to the recruiting team to avoid scenarios like this. The partner likely didn't heed that coaching.
Wait and see if you get the offer, and if you get lowballed. Then decide.
As an update (for anyone who is interested lol), I did end up speaking to the recruiter. He apologized profusely and echoed the sentiment that they really prefer partners not to have compensation conversations. When talking to the partner, he (the partner) indicated that he thought I was interviewing for a more junior role, not a manager role. Not sure that makes it any better 😂
It doesn’t…I love working at RSM but its also group dependent. I would run for the hills if I were you
Rising Star
Well the next thing is should you give the recruiter that direct feedback about the partner?
Run, Forrest, run!
Which group were you interviewing with? I’m guessing Audit?
I’m not super sure. There wasn’t a ton of talk of their org within the company, only within the practice, but I’m assuming Consulting? I think the practice is PPM.
Red flag — always go with your gut👍
Indeed. People can rationalize almost anything.
What group did you interview with?
I think Consulting? PPM?
