I’m sorry you and your baby are going through this! Just in case, have you considered food allergies? My hound is allergic to chicken, it gave her horrible stomach problems, and I know of dogs that are allergic to all birds. I learned this from talking to other dog owners, my vet never mentioned anything about allergies so just passing along the info. My dog is now on limited ingredient kibble and does great.
Thanks! Yes, he’s my second dog with a chicken allergy, or at least a processed chicken allergy. My previous dog couldn’t have chicken in her dry or wet food but she was fine on fresh pet chicken. So strange. I’ve switched my boy back to a limited ingredient food he loved a few months ago. I think that my only complaint about it was that his poop was soft so if he can stay stabilized on this then I’ll try adding probiotics to his meals to see if that will help his poop. I decided to go ahead and make the hard switch by following petmd’s instructions. So far, he’s happy and his GI system seems to be ok. It likely helps that he’s currently on cerenia so fingers crossed that this food works when his prescription for cerenia ends
Glad things are working out for now and hopefully that’s a long term solution!
Have you considered a raw diet for your dog? It's easier for dogs to digest a raw diet than a processed diet. Or try putting some goat milk on his kibble, it's a great probiotic.
Have you tried probiotics for dogs. My dog is not having issues but I happen to ask my vet about them and she said she would recommend just for a healthy gut. It also is supposed to help with diarrhea.
I would give chicken and rice and pumpkin until diarrhea is gone then find another food and slowly introduce it with the dog probiotics.
Yeah, I did a hard switch to a different brand and protein thinking of protein allergy from eating the same food for years. Everything seems better.
Sounds like he needs some good probiotics. You can find them as supplements to put in the food at most quality pet food & supply stores. Also try giving some goat milk that that is for animal comsumption (not processed or pasturized), good quality yogurt that contains all the probiotics ( live cultures) in them such as Brown Cow whole milk yogurt with cream on top. I give all of these (alternate them) to my JR, it has helped with his gut issues and he now has perfectly formed stools, as well as supports his immune system.
Also give your dog a bland diet of steamed rice, bone broth & cooked chicken or ground beef until his stools improve.

Short term, see if any of Greek yogurt, plain pureed pumpkin, or sweet potatoes can help his current situation. Some say boiled rice as well but that never worked for us.
I did a hard switch to raw feeding 3.5 years ago and both my dogs have been on it since. My vet doesn’t like the idea of raw feeding (vets usually feel this way) but he said recently “you must be on to smithing because your bulldogs are the healthiest of all my clients and they have great coats!”

Also forgot to mention, a large percentage of dogs are allergic to chicken and most dog foods have chicken or some type of chicken by product. I don’t feed chicken in any form. Many of my friends don’t either.
My vet had me switch him to a sensitive stomach food and I slowly switched him over a month, instead of the normal week or two, but he’s had even more issues since being on 100% the new food for the past week. My vet has suggested a hydrolyzed diet, which we may do. I want to try one or two more foods. He’s been on probiotics for over a month, and they did help but I stopped them when he started getting super sick this week. I’m torn between trying a food that he liked but had soft poop with but I don’t remember him vomiting while eating it and trying something completely new and different, a kangaroo-based dog food. He’s had soft poops that I’ve been trying to improve since I adopted him 10 months ago. I feel like I’ve massively screwed up somewhere along the way and I desperately want to hit reset on his tummy issues. He’s been such a good boy throughout and I just want him to feel good.

What’s the breed of your dog? We kept our dog on the Kirkland chicken food that the breeder was giving and he always had soft poops and we or the doctors never realized why. For 1.5 years we tried all the things you mentioned and then one private trainer recommended breed specific Royal Canin food. As soon as we changed our lab on that, all his tummy issues magically disappeared. The food is a bit more on the expensive side but it’s been such a blessing. Maybe try that once - you of course have to transition slowly but we did the transition to chicken and rice first and then moved him over a weeks time to this new food.
I did the same thing when I adopted my dog. He’s a Saint Bernard and I bought the food that the rescue recommended, which was a chicken and rice recipe. I figured out very quickly that that food upset his tummy and we haven’t gone back to it or anything similar since then. He did ok on a lamb and rice based food that a bunch of Saint owners recommended but he loved this salmon based food that had been recommended as well but that he only ate for two months. I’ve looked at some of the Royal canin options but a lot of them have chicken in their ingredients in one form or another so I’ve stayed away. I’m hoping that this food with a probiotic added will be the magical combination.

Can you do a bland food diet until his tummy issues get under control and then go from there?
I wish that that was an option. He’s allergic to chicken, or at least VERY sensitive to it. Even a small amount makes him sick. He also doesn’t like rice lol. So far, cerenia with his old food is working. He hasn’t thrown up since Saturday (I started the hard switch on Sunday) and his poop has been ok. He’s been prescribed the cerenia for two weeks so the real test will be when we stop the cerenia.
