Logistic growth models in calculus would be interesting place to bring it up.
I haven't, only because I teach in Seattle and the public emergency here is WAY too real and serious to bring it up to kids.
Algebra: I was planning a basic exponential growth model to show how to calculate rate. If the first 14 days there were 70 cases (amount) and 30 days later (time) there were 1257 cases, what is the rate of growth?
70(1+r)^t-14=1257
To understand the spread. I didn’t present it since it for a future unit
I had a coworker that did this on Thursday. I was planning on doing it Friday but it was the last day so we focused on making sure the students had work to do over the shut down. I thought it was pretty cool.
I think that’s a great idea. I touched on it but since I’m 7th grade they’re not at that stage yet. We were just learning about the constant of proportionality before closure so I used it as a nonexample. I think it’d be cool motivator if you started by ripping a piece of paper in half and continue to do that until the class was “infected” To help with the anxiety, you could also go back and remove one of the students to say they self quarantined and the rest of the student population are fine🤷🏼♀️
Love this idea!
