I boomerang’d to back to consulting after a long 5 year foray into tech. My second stint only lasted 9 months before I realized consulting wasn’t for me and now I’m with Microsoft. Few things
Variable pay: variable pay is actually much greater percentage in tech. Consulting is base plus cash bonus. Tech is base plus cash bonus plus RSUs- with RSUs being a very significant % at higher levels.
It was easy to get re-hired back, but it was extremely difficult once I was in the door within consulting. Easy re-hire —> My background was familiar, there’s a ton of churn and therefore slots.
Hard once hired —> directors / partners did not like my non prestigious education (BA + MBA). I was asked several times I got in from a non target school. I was competing at M / SM level with folks with established partner relationships, at least for me the mentors I sought had other priorities. Finally even being in “tech strategy” I was coached to stop leveraging product or tech solutions, my perception was 95% of output was labor intensive and took the form of PowerPoint.
Pro
Tldr: it’s harder than simply being re-hired to return to a firm, especially after a multi year hiatus. I would not recommend doing so. That being said, I do not believe consulting is an attractive industry in 2021 and encourage those with interest in other industries to jump
