I don’t work at SF but I’ll share my experience/advice.
Your mental health is up to you to manage, and if you need a break you take the PTO even if it means not taking a vacation or otherwise later on. Get your stuff covered, and when you take those days off DO NOT WORK and do what you need to take care of yourself.
Members of my team have absolutely taken mental health breaks using their PTO. If you have that kind of relationship w your manager you can share but I wouldn’t necessarily unless you feel really comfortable. You don’t need to tell anyone (including your boss) what the reason is.
Now, if you need more time than you have PTO, that’s a different story and you may have to review what your company allows or how you can use FMLA.
I did recently. Had an anxiety breakdown from all the work. Talked to my primary doctor who diagnosed me with anxiety and depression. Told them I want to take 2 months off work, and she said to take as long as I need, and they would fill out any paperwork. Told HR first, who then told my manager. Left 2 days after that notice as temporary medical leave (non FMLA since I hadn’t been there 1 year yet). It was great as I had time to find my life again and adjust to the new antidepressants. Went to therapy sessions. When I came back, I was let go within a month as part of a layoff plan, supposedly. So your make may vary. Either way, best 2 months of my life as I had time to reconnect with family and friends, learned what was important to me, and just really learned to relax. Would 10/10 recommend.

Hope you are doing well now. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I'm boosting this because I would love to know if anyone has done this. I've considered doing it during Covid, but I kinda just pushed through. It would be nice to know if this was possibly, just in case, for the future.
I really want to do this but I dont think the corporate environment is gonna like that. Curious to see if there are any workspaces that prioritize mental health and worker health
I would start by having a conversation with your physician to see if they would be willing to write you out of work. Then, you can apply for leave. You don't have to give the specific reason, but you will almost certainly need some sort of doctor's note to back up your request.
Kudos for bringing this up. I haven't taken an extended one but I make sure to take sick days along side of long weekends to take longer break
You're re not really obligated to disclose personal details but just give them a general explanation, like needing a break to rest and recharge.
