Not today, New York Times
Its not great. It’s not even good
These are my theories. I’ve never worked at MBB so it’s hard to say how differentiating these theories really are-
1) We are a small firm so its easy to develop strong working relationships with a larger % of the firm
2) We tend to attract those who aren’t singularly gunning for the MBB brand name so I suspect that people tend to be happier about sticking around because they aren’t simply doing it to have a logo on the resume for a few years
3) This isn’t official but we somehow do a good job screening for ‘smart’ and ‘humble’ ... I suspect this is because interviewers look for people like themselves and this creates a (perhaps an unintentional) network effect
P1: there’s been a significant number of partners that have left in the last three years to MBB, Accenture/Big 4, Alix etc. what would attribute that to? I admit this is anecdotal at best, but seems more voluntary movement than other firms.
As an ex-ATK here are my thoughts:
1. It’s a lot easier to keep a culture strong when you are 1/6th the revenue of a McKinsey.
2. Firm is incredibly international, I had projects in 9+ countries and visited 20+ officers in 8 years. This allows for a more cohesive culture across regions
3. Virtually all consultants are home grown. Though there has been a few senior laterals, most people come in at the BA / SBA / Associate levels
It varies across verticals and horizontals. I would not advise you to leave McKinsey for ATK culture. In the company bowl, consultants are generally not happy with the partners - toxic and overbearing.
I never claimed that only ATK partners are toxic and overbearing. I cannot speak to how McKinsey partners are as I never worked there. I can only tell from my experience at ATK and what I see in the company bowl.
I am cautioning OP that grass on the other side is not greener culture wise.
One thing I would add is it’s very egalitarian. I (as an Associate) would not hesitate to email the Managing Partner if I felt there was an issue worth his time. Or any other leader
MCK1 - review how each firm executes its fit interviews, especially for undergrad/MBA hires. I personally think ATK has most time given to fit I believe final rounds are 1 super difficult written case and 2x 45 min fit interviews. Recognize quantity and quality are not the same but quantity does matter.
That’s true. A very wise comment.
