You were partially misinformed as if you are put on a performance improvement plan and do not improve then your name is added to the list of people to be laid off not to get you to quit before a mass layoff. If a person quits a job just for being placed on a Performance Improvement Plan, then I guess they do not care about improving in their job and also are not open to any job feedback.
In the job market now, we are all just transactional to employers as they only care about what we can produce NOW for them.
A PIP is often used to create a paper trail so someone can be let go without having any claim of wrongful termination. The plans are ostensibly to get someone to improve their work and meet expectations. In practice they can be a fiction and are really used to encourage someone to give up and quit, or, to eventually let them go.
Usually the first piece of advice that I see given to those placed on PIP, is to start looking for a new role ASAP. Few people come back from a PIP.

I’ve heard mixed things about PIPs. In some companies they’re genuinely meant to help someone improve with clear goals and support, but in others they can unfortunately be used as a step toward letting someone go. I think it really depends on the company and how the process is handled.
