You’re not imagining it. Good looks are currency in the workplace—especially in client-facing roles. We just don’t talk about it because it makes people uncomfortable.
To be honest, I believe I am one of those you speak of and definitely am grateful that it’s helped me climb the ranks thus far in my career.
That being said, I don’t think it’s that alone that has to be credited for success—I was adamant about advocating for myself and every promotion I’ve received I got because I asked for it and I asked for it well before performance review time. I also made sure to “dress the part” in the sense that I never showed up to work in sweats, athleisure, or otherwise “lazy clothes” for lack of a better word given I wanted to gain the reputation that was professional and polished.
Finally, with the benefits of pretty privilege also come the negatives… I feel like I’ve had to fight like hell to prove that I’m actually smart and know the business and actually deserve my seat at the table. What’s crazy is that I’ve visibly seen the surprise on people’s faces once they realize I’m not just a pretty face and that was baffling the first time it happened. And look, this isn’t me complaining whatsoever but figured I’d offer up another perspective on the matter.
At the end of the day, don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself now matter what. Be clear about what you want, what you expect, and the timing to make it happen. Rooting for you!
Attractiveness goes beyond the physical and also has more to do with confidence and how you carry yourself in my experience.
When it comes to “getting grace,” those people likely also have kind and attractive personalities that help them gain support and sympathy.

I’ve definitely seen it in terms of the charming personality. I worked with someone who barely did their job, but knew how to schmooze and he went far.
Sure, definitely in some cases - particularly with clients in accounts and sales roles. However, charm can do the same. I've seen people be highly successful in those roles and get tons of grace from clients based on charisma and humor even if they're not conventionally good looking.
It also depends on the situation and sometimes gender - I've had attractive female friends have a harder time getting taken seriously in more technical roles.
On the inverse, you also have people invalidating your experience and hard work and attributing success to how you look, women being catty and rude and sometimes blatant mean girl experiences, and male coworkers or clients getting a little too friendly. Having a married coworker you thought was a friend try to sleep with you is pretty awful.
I’ve been on both sides as my looks and weight have changed over the years and the grass is not greener on either side
Someone with a quick smile, friendly personality, pleasant looks (not super-model or NFL quarterback looks necessarily) do tend to "get a pass" quicker than a Plain Jane or Dull Doug. However, those who are enamored with their own looks and feel that they are superior to others because of it will be put in their place fairly quickly. There may be some subconscious bias in favor of the "pretty," but in the grand scheme of things it is negligible. Courtesy, work ethic, knowledge, experience and modest go a lot further than six-pack abs and leading-man looks or blonde bombshells who need to wear a sign saying "Dangerous curves ahead."
Have you met the poster on this platform who is too unattractive to be seen on camera during zoom meetings?
As someone who has benefited from it, looks and charisma go a long way. I'm not going to complain about it.
Yeah those ppl also get away with not doing any work
