Take all 16-18 weeks of paternity. It was needed but also super fun.
Short-term:
1. Be patient with your spouse and kid. Lots of new little needs and tasks will arise. Try to power through it and most importantly maintain your cool
2. Be kind on yourself. There are things you will miss or mess up. Sometimes you will just need to get through the day
3. Get all the help you can or outsource tasks that you can
4. Preparation is key. So plan ahead and anticipate your baby's and your needs
5. Divide and conquer. Fight the urge to do everything together with your spouse
6. Keep Infants gas relief drops handy
Longer-term:
1. Plan for sleep training
2. Plan for introducing solids early and appropriately e.g. baby led weaning
Always:
Observe your baby closely and relish every little development they make
Another tip is take shifts. I’m a late night guy so took the 9pm to 3am shift. Also, get them on a routine as soon as possible. It won’t happen for a few months but once they’re on it it’s great. Congratulations!
^^ this! You get it…and then you don’t …. And again
However many diapers you bought that you *thought* was enough... Trust me, it's not. Go buy more.
Yep. We averaged 60-65 changes a week for our kids in the first couple months. That box of 100 goes really fast.
Sleep when they sleep. Afternoon naps are awesome.
Just finished feeding the 1 month old a bottle😂. Biggest thing for us was the feeding. It’s a learned process for baby and mom. It can be extremely stressful at times especially at 2am when baby/mom are both crying and baby won’t get a good latch. Stay calm and troubleshoot with her..be her cheerleader. For us we ended up doing 90% bottle with breast milk and 10% actual breast feeding. If you have to or want to go the formula route that’s ok too. Plenty of baby’s are formula fed (I was - look at me now!😂). Starting the bottle was great because now we can take turns and she’s not stuck in a chair for an hour every 2-3 hours.
ALSO BUY THIS MASK FOR THE HOSPITAL! Nurses come in almost every 2-4 hours all day and night and there will always be some light on in the room. I also brought a thin sleeping bag, the little bed for the dads was more comfortable that way.
