No, they don’t call your employer. They rely on the credit check pull that often includes last few employers.
Let’s separate the issues, since they really aren’t related.
#1 Your review is typically a time to tell your story, provide supporting evidence of reaching your goals for the year, and try to make a strong case for going above and beyond. Your manager provides their assessment, hopefully there is not new information in the review. If anything negative is observed it was discussed in advance. You settle on a rating for the year which sometimes sets bonus, or leads to promotion.
#2 You want to relocate. You’re changing the work agreement, or established norm. I would take this as a separate 1:1 conversation after I know where I stand and seek approval, which may take some time. If you get an average or below average rating you may want to rethink your conversation and start looking for jobs in the new area. There will always be rentals. Typical sales person sets a time box to get you to act. Basically my advice is to slow down, get your approval in order, then start looking and applying.
There are many ways to verify employment. None of them call your boss directly. The most direct approach is HR if they call at all.
Hey, thanks for the advice! I agree that this is not a typical conversation during a yearly review but I have all of my wins, opportunities, goals and challenges ready to present. Our team is fairly casual compared to other companies that I have worked for. I am confident that bringing up my reasonings for heading back home will be received well during this time. I excel in my position and regularly receive feedback regarding this. I’m not concerned about receiving negative marks.
In regards to rentals — trust, I know the ‘hurry and apply’ game! We have been on the hunt for a couple months now and have lost out on our top two property interests just due to timing. I do not feel pressured to apply to this property but I would like to get the ball rolling and this property meets all of our needs. If we miss out, it’s okay, it wasn’t meant for us.
My main concern was that I did not want my bosses to potentially get a call to verify my employment and a landlord slip up about the state. I feel that the relocation conversation needs to be between myself and my bosses first.
We have found a rental that we like and is within our budget and there was one other applicant other than my partner and I. The listing agent called us today to let us know that the applicant was not accepted and if we apply tonight or tomorrow she will be able to review our application Thursday after the holidays. This is before my yearly review and the application requires the norm of current employer information. I know I am most likely overthinking the situation but when verifying employment/current pay, does the landlord/rental company typically call the current employer or do they verify employment another way? I am a bit worried that verification by phone before I’ve had the opportunity to address with my leads myself will not be appropriate. Any and all advice greatly appreciate!
The decision to approve a remote employee has corporate income and payroll tax implications. Some employers have restrictions on which states an employee can work remotely in FYI. I would confirm with HR using a hypothetical if your employer allows remote employees in whatever state you are moving to.
Thanks for the advice! My company currently already has remote employees residing in my home state so I think I am in the clear tax wise.
Sounds like you’re off to an amazing new year!
