I may be wrong, or perhaps just way too literal, but I would say if your ultimate goal is to be a hospital CEO or COO, a master's in hospital administration would be more useful than an MBA. The MBA is probably more versatile. I won't say an MBA is not an appropriate degree -- after all, hospitals are also businesses, whether we want to admit it or not. I will say all of the upper-echelon administrators I have worked for and with have at least a MHA with "a bunch" of years of experience to get into the big office.
Agree with what MP1 said! My health system favors MBAs. Personally, it doesn’t pigeon hole you to only healthcare also.
I've seen a combination of MHA and MBA as CEO and COO. Your career track and experience will play a large role in navigating up the ladder. I also started as a strategy consultant for a large healthcare system with a MHA. Currently I'm at the director level after 3 years of experience. I have a MHA which helped tremendously in understanding healthcare operations and business.
