That looks like a “we would like to offer a job at below market rate” type of conversation.
Share your excitement about the role and more importantly what you value or like about the company. Be confident in your skills and highlight your exceedingly high success rate and why they need this in a leader. Double down on your interest, your abilities, what you bring. Don’t word a hint of desperation. Avoid the compensation flexibility trap. Instead double down on confidence and a ready from day one attitude.

I agree with the person above don’t be afraid to be confident and don’t sell yourself short. You only have one chance to negotiate your pay structure and that’s when you start.
I will take that as a negative. If they can't afford you, then go somewhere that will pay you the amount that your qualifications deserve.
Don't settle for anything less, Know your value because there will be other companies that can afford you. Take it as a bait. Maybe they think you are that desperate to get the job and that you will negotiate to lower down your demands.
