Sounds like the fund hired above you, so there’s limits on your mobility up even with more YOE. You can certainly ask for more money. I’m at a HF and teams usually hire assistant controller/controllers externally for their knowledge and experience over promoting junior fund accountant. It’s just how it is, because maybe you’re good at your day job but don’t have other industry knowledge of processes, etc.
A little more context. The firm does promote from within. The controller and CFO also mentioned that there can be multiple Assistant Controllers in my YE review meeting last year because they were aware that is what I was shooting for. Money won’t solve that I’m trying to progress in my career.
My question is how do I initiate the talk. I’m ok if they tell me an answer I’m not happy with because it will push me to look outside.
Experience is 3 yrs in PA (Big 4) and 3 yrs in Private. I have more experience than the rest of the fund accountants, and have pretty much seen a majority of the processes. It has gotten to the point where I have outgrown my current role so I need to make a move if that makes sense.
Can you share your thoughts on how you would open up that conversation? I am just worried that I may come across aggressively.
Find a quiet time to grab coffee or have a short chat one on one with your boss and ask what they want to see from you to get promoted. See if they can they path forward or you’ll have your answer.
Prior to this conversation it may be worth a self assessment and see if there is anything that is giving your boss pause in promoting you. I’m getting the sense that you are expecting a promotion due to time in grade and that’s not generally how private (and especially HF’s) operate. Are you acting in the next capacity? Are you being asked to take on more responsibilities or are you asking for that type of work? Your boss may think you’re happy in your current role and the WLB and don’t want a promotion.
In that case, can you think of any reason why you haven’t been promoted? It’s good to be prepared for countering potential responses.
In summary how do I make my expectations known in a professional manner?
What level are you and how many yoe? Many of these funds have a flatter structure so you don't get promoted often unlike PA. I would also look at the level above you on LinkedIn and see how long it took those people to get there .
I thought there was no busy season in industry. Sheez, can I dm you curious to hear comp compared to pa as I am in Fund audits
Start searching. Sorry, but if they wanted to move u up, they would! Don't bare ur soul to them that's what they want to see.
