I was a PM at an agency and now in program management at Google.
I don’t work with agencies at all in my role, and many ex agency people don’t either. I would be cautious about making the transition purely to “be the boss now”.
In most cases you’re moving laterally, and not up the ladder. It will be several years before I’m a boss of any kind, and I left agency as an APD.
Agencies are still your partner even if you go client side. Don’t treat them as your employees.
I think the light hearted joke over shadowed the real question. I love the agency world and never mean to be the boss or downplay the work we do day in and day out just looking for advice
Focus on your results - was there brand engagement lift based on work you did, revenue gains, website traffic, etc. It’ll be less about the creative output and more about how you/the work drove impact.
It’s challenging to transition to a brand management role in general, and probably moreso from PM. You might find a role on the brand team as a program/project manager and be able to transition over time to a brand manager.
