Hi, everyone. I’m copywriter looking to break into UX writing. I don’t have a lot of UX work in my portfolio. I’ve mostly worked on digital campaigns on social media and some website writing for brands. I’m wondering what I need in my portfolio to help me get a job as a UX writer. Is there anything specific I should include? Anything I should learn and prep for interviews? I don’t have money to go back to school unfortunately.

This is maybe over simplified, but UX roles of any sort come down to: research, testing, and iterating. Show how you do those things in your portfolio; not just the end result. And be prepared to answer interview questions with those three touch points as the basis for almost any answer.

If you’re not doing those three things, you give yourself away as an outsider to the UX field pretty quickly. And if you currently don’t do all three, start doing reading about how better to fill your gaps so you can grow into the role you want.

I'm another copywriter doing the same. Here's what I've found.

For the most part, if you've done web writing, you've done UX writing. You've written for user flows, you've made considerations for button copy/navigation copy/CTA copy, you've created a content framework in order to display the information on the site in a logical, engaging way and (probably) tell a product story. You've worked with a multi-disciplinary team of strategists, analysis, marketers, and visual designers to wireframe a web experience and produce it. And if you've built tests into that, even better.

I've been playing that experience up and backing it up by what I choose to put in my portfolio site (web work, microsites, web tools, etc.). In fact, from what I've found, the biggest difference between copywriters and UX writers is HOW they talk about what they do, because there's a big overlap in WHAT they do.

Hey folks. Question for the majority of us still under the big 3 holding co’s...are raises a thing anymore? I’ve been at my (smaller) agency almost 5yrs and got one raise (a nice $12k bump) during that time—is that sufficient? Is one increase in that span normal? I also recognize being somewhere 5 years is rare these days. The honeymoon period at any agency seems to be 2.5—3yrs before bolting. Not complaining, just asking. Have y’all been getting raises/bumps in any kind of regular cycle? Thx.
