Hi everyone! Im looking for some advice. I’m a year into my first full time UX job at an agency and I think I’m ready to move on. I love my coworkers but the hours are extremely draining and the timelines are stressful. I’m looking to switch to an in house role to hopefully find more work life balance. Is it too soon to start looking? Or should I keep at it for a bit longer? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you!

I don’t think it’s too soon! I left my agency UX role around a year in. BUT I’d see if there are other projects and clients. Maybe it’s the specific project you’re on. I wish I had done that instead of leaving because agency gives you a lot of opportunities to try many different things and that’s super valuable starting in your career.

What type of UX work do you do?

Mostly visual strategy for corporate b2b websites - so I facilitate workshops, craft the IA, build wireframes and if I’m lucky we do some user testing.

I joined a project that had already started and the team already settled on creating a user journey map, even though none of them are designers or in ux. I also have no experience in this field as I'm a data engineer. The user journey map was for mapping out the process for tenants finding housing assistance, so not a technical product. Given this new field and type of work, I've been having a really tough time. Anyone mind sharing what helped get you through your first ux project?

I think I may have finally had it.

A couple of decades in this field and now I want to just walk away. The grind in tech is soul-destroying, and the vast majority of the time, coworkers outside of UX have no idea what it is, what it’s for, and how it’s applied. I’m at my wits end and the constant problem is a kind of “willful misunderstanding” of our process and value.

After wasting too many years on design immature companies, It’s senselessly depressing. I’ve given away too much of myself.
