Additional Posts in Consulting Exit Opportunities
Hi all! I’m looking to connect with folks who either work at Coinbase or have interviewed recently for the Business Operations and Strategy Manager or similar role. I am looking to schedule my first interview which I believe is a consulting style case. So any details you can provide, I am all ears. The next interview will be a presentation. Again if you have any experience/advice on this, I’m ready to listen.
Thanks in advance! Help me escape Deloitte pleaseeee. I want this job sooo much!

Just so you know chief, existing job is not a protected class - so good luck with that lawsuit
Yes, but you have a broad selection of companies thankfully. The new-age tech companies like Google, Facebook, Tesla..., more traditional players like Juniper, Hitachi, NetApp, HP, SAP,...to SaaS players like Citrix, Salesforce, and so on.
Lots of MBB bias at the big new tech firms
Because of the way the job description is written you won’t have a case - top strat firm (provided examples of types of firms) OR top corp strategy experience. Says nothing about ONLY accepting from certain firms or listing those 3 firms as it’s only criteria. Perhaps try to network your way in?
Bay area has lots of exit opps if you're in tech. What industry?
Open to any industry. I see a lot of bias towards MBB at Google and others such tech shops. It amazes me that a public company is allowed to discriminate.
I feel suing them for discrimination when the job profile says stupid things like MBB if you are a publicly traded company. Case in point...see below.
https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/corporate-strategy-manager-at-paypal-589772693
McK is a feeder for LinkedIn. You basically can’t work in Corp strategy unless you come from there
This job was not at LinkedIn. It was a PayPal position advertised through linkedin. Regardless, if you want to make a quick buck..you can sue them for discrimination by limiting talent from only these few companies.
What firm are you with OP?
I understand your concern of bias.. but can tell you for sure..there are plenty non MBBfolks in these companies too.
I just exited out to a traditional tech company in such role.
@D1. OP clearly said MBBs. So what's on mbb folks working in these firms gotta do with the question?
Plenty of those jobs if you’re willing to move out of the Bay Area
P1 what's making you leave? Interesting to see a Partner/Principal look for other opps
C1- One thing is to become principal and another is to sustain and then become partner and sustain as a partner. Sustaining as Partner or Principal is difficult in short. The revenue targets are tough to achieve. It is beyond delivery now. You have to travel and maintain accounts across the US to continue to sell. Firms in the bay area are tough to sell to. Travel is a big reason. Tough to maintain accounts and clients in mid west and East coast.
Secondly, in the bay area there are corporate opportunities that can help you make decent money and leverage your consulting skills and grow in corporate ranks. That is my hypothesis. Work Life balance is better.
I also have kids so that plays a role.
I would like to hear what other partner or principal's reasons are.
OP, did you find any opportunities?
Pwc2 - I have been looking but very slow at it. My project commitments get in the way.
PayPal does that because their corporate strategy team is run by McKinsey people. They are looking for peers and don’t view Big4 consultants as such.
I believe a lot of the west coast Corp strategy teams are exMBB. I think Microsoft is mostly ex McKinsey
