Hi Slalom 🐠- have an offer and really interested in joining, but unsure how I feel about the flat consultant structure. Do you feel like you miss out not getting the promotion titles?

Absolutely! You WILL miss out. Moving up here is arbitrary and dependent on the wind and whim. You're much better off passing on this offer.

Bonuses are subpar, mileage discretionary, raises are a joke. Trust me! Especially, if you already have consulting experience. Not worth it, unless you really really really need a local position. But listen, if you don't have a newborn or someone is dying--- pass on this. Be patient & wait for something different.

Nice people and it's nice to be home during the week, but these are the years to grow and earn. You won't get that here. Maybe a handful of people in each market are doing "well", but again - bc of the lack of structure and path to promotion there simply isn't much to grow into. Compared to the rest of the industry we're grossly underpaid as well.

I’m in the analytics practice at Slalom as a consultant. I agree that moving up is hard, but you will get to learn a lot. That practice is very entrepreneurial and you can learn different aspects of analytics. So if you are looking to do that, this is a good place. Leadership is solid and culture is v good. People are also very nice- no toxicity. If you are able to sell a bit you can get a big raise and 15+% bonus. Overall happy working here. You can be clear about your goals about moving up and they can make it happen.

For an alternate pov, I love the flat structure. I absolutely kill at delivery, and I frequently bring leads back to those who are interested in the rest. Am compensated as well as and in some cases better than those with titles. I get to have dinner w the family every night, sleep in my own bed, say yes to what I want, no to what I don't, and I *love* my colleagues. When I get an itch to do something different, no one says no, they ask what help I need. I get involved in 2-3 'internal' things per year. After a few years, got the opp to buy in. (Best investment bar that early days startup, and might ivertake that soon) I understand that's maybe a little exceptional. If I wanted to, I could manage people (I'd rather just be a casual mentor). Bottom line, it's exactly what someone with a drive to deliver and keep learning new things, but no call for a title can thrive at. And, it's been made clear - if I ever want the politics and to commit to the internals - can make a plan, deliver it, and have that, too. If you want the titles, you gotta dig deep, but they are there, too.

Who gets to buy in? Invite only or automatic at certain levels and above. Does it give tons of money?

SC1 - I’m here (Slalom) and all of my concerns were correct. Lots of ambiguity that I can only imagine how long it would take to work through

like

Yeah, it just depends on how aggressive you want to be in driving your career. The ambiguity can also be used to your advantage. However, if your team already has an SP and a PAL there’s really no where to move into until that team grows some more. Wait 5 years? Slalom’s a great place, but eventually folks on the top end outgrow it because there’s no place to move transition to.

It all depends on what you’re looking for. I agree with C1. Moving up can feel arbitrary. Much harder in our advisory practices. If you’re in tech, it’ll be easier. If you’re sick of the road and your offer is good $$$, it might be worth it. Expect 2-4% raises and about 7% bonus each year. I’ve really enjoyed working here

like

Sadly, leadership and culture are dependent on which market you join. Again, there are some nice people, but I've seen our culture deteriorate because people's frustrations, lack of leadership, cronyism, ever-changing vision and little change. I'm not trying to be a party pooper, but I would look elsewhere.

like

I'm in the analytics practice out of Chicago. Will agree that raises are extremely underwhelming, you will be disappointed. Also, leadership is all a popularity game at the end of the day. I was tired of the road and crazy hours so moved over to Slalom, and I will say my work life balance is great. Tops 50 hrs a week, usually much less. Travel is limited to within the Chicagoland area, which to me is a bit annoying because I have to drive out to the suburbs Mon through Thursday a lot of weeks which can be over an hour each way, so take that into consideration. You're not flying but you may be wasting hours sitting behind a wheel in traffic. Projects to me have been subpar, lots of staff aug work. If you're interested in the coding side of it, build might be a good option. I've heard they're doing cool work. I love a lot of the people I work with, company throws great parties, but at the end of the day: subpar pay, bad raises, frat like leadership, and staff aug work mixed in with work life balance and staying within illinois.

Slalom is a place for stability and work life balance. If you care about your title and advancing your career don’t go to Slalom.

Up for snr cons at current firm, but wanting to leave due to toxic leadership. Heard great things about Slalom culture, hence wanting to make the jump but not wanting to lose out on the title.

@SC1 - I would be joining the analytics practice, are you saying there’s more room for growth/promo opps here?

like

Definitely more room to grow in that practice. If you’re up for SC, I would try and negotiate for a SP title, if you’re willing to sell, or just get more money if you want to stay at Consultant. We don’t have Senior Consultants

like

Sounds like you are early on in your career. A couple of years at Slalom won’t hold you back, but there are definitely more growth opportunities at a big firm.

Like SC1 said, our tech practices like D&A have a clearer vision that our business advisory groups.

I’ve been at the firm for a little less than 3 years. My first year raise was 10% with 12% bonus, got a promo with a 10% raise, and this last year my raise was about 7% with 10% bonus. I’m in advisory, killing in delivery, great client feedback, doing lots of biz dev and offering dev, and loving the flat structure. Pay isn’t quite comparable to B4 (not too far), but I also work an average of 45-50hr/week so life is good. If you thrive in ambiguity, can build a strong network, and move decisively you’ll do just fine.

like

Is this typical? Any idea what average raises and bonuses are in your office? 😉

Hi fishes, I want to move to management consulting. Current role is an internal data science consultant for driving OpEx.

Is it possible without a) going for an MBA b) Starting from the bottom at Undergrad analyst level.
Would ideally target pre-MBA Associate level (one step short of post MBA level).

How hard is everyone pushing their corporate clients to authorize nonresident assignees whose only 2020 US compensation was the value of their 2019 tax preparation?
My clients are pushing back on it this year, and I can't say I blame them. If I were in their shoes, I'd rather take the risk of not filing than the expense of filing again. From my own point of view, I don't really want to spend my time on such returns, either, even if the revenue and easy return are nice.
