Always remember your leadership principles. Let them be your guide.
In some cases, it is merely time in rank, whereas other times you have to go on leadership courses. There also has to be a position available. It is very much like a triangle, in that there are less positions as you go up.
When you are on the enlisted side, you will basically get promotion points. These come from your awards and your PT scores.
If you decide to become an officer, then you will typically be promoted for time of service and how well you do at your job.
E1-E4 primarily based on time in service (but can be advanced by chain of command)
E-5 and above, based on promotion points garnered from training, PT scores, promotion board, etc. The number of points needed for the next rank is determined by the need for that rank in your particular skill
if you want to become an officer, you need to have gone to college (unless you have special benefits, particularly from the president or someone high up). Plus, you will need a GT score of 110 or better on the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test.
Most people take the enlisted side. Enlisted people do all the shooting and blowing things up. But the officers are more of an administrative postion. They are responsible for soldiers. The higher your rank as an officer, the more people you are responible for. Officers generally ride a desk believe it or not.
