Employers have to pay taxes based in part on where the employee lives so most won’t let you work where they don’t have an office to avoid figuring out/complying with all the local tax requirements. For firms, another reason is that even if you get barred in the state where they don’t have an office the firm for malpractice insurance reasons likely wants to say you are supervised by a partner also licensed in that state/the firm is itself licensed to do business in that state.
Obviously some firms are figuring out workarounds.
Admission is a real problem. My firm won’t allow you to live/work in a state you aren’t licensed in.
Where do you live/where are you barred now?
Hi I’m working 100% remotely in MN but am technically part of the Chicago office of my firm which doesn’t have a MN office. I only pay MN state taxes, but am required to be admitted in IL (admission still pending)
It was a fully remote position that I applied for that became available during COVID. Was the first time that cravath scale was available in this market without having to move, so I jumped on it :)
