If I ever get a PIP, I will start looking for another job...To me, the firm is just buying you time.

We’re a mix. We will put people on PIP if we think there is a chance that they can improve and “graduate” positively. When we think there’s no chance of that, we don’t go through a PIP process.
I have seen people successfully make it through PIP and get subsequent promotions. And of course people where we part ways.
pips seem to be used more for off cycle terms. also, onced pipped, recovery is likely < 10%
As D1 mentions, PIPs would generally line up with a poor review cycle. I haven’t been close enough to many of the people I know that were let go to have candid conversations about how it went down but if I had to guess I’d say a slight majority of folks don’t get the “luxury” of a PIP before separation.
