The world is really not built for this. But if you WFH, have a nanny, are PT, and are willing to be adequate at your job sometimes, you can make it through feeling OK on all fronts.

If you can hire a night nurse even just for a couple nights, it makes a huge difference.
I slept under my desk at one point 😂🫶🏻
Try to find good childcare. Take shifts during the night with your partner so you both get periods of uninterrupted sleep, and maybe try a version of sleep training if your baby is old enough so they can learn to self-soothe. You got this! It gets better 🙏🏼
I’d research the impact of sleep training a 5 month old before you do it. I found letting my infant cry themselves into hysteria to the point of vomiting/till they pass out to be worse than the rest I got rocking them to sleep. Not to mention the permanent damage of having a baby flood their system with cortisol every night.
My baby eventually slept but I changed my mindset to what the baby needed as opposed to worrying about what I needed. It helped me to have the fuck off mindset at work and it actually worked.
I’d also suggest going on a flex schedule.
Having kids is really hard. Big law is really hard. Try to see how long you can swing it back at work and what works for your baby and you.
I’m in big law, about to head on my second mat leave with toddler. Im sorry but you can’t be amazing at both, but you’re strong and you should trust your instincts.
Get a night nurse and then sleep train the baby (or get the night nurse or your partner to sleep train the baby). It’s very expensive but you will crack if you’re not sleeping and coming back from mat leave is hard enough. I am only suggesting this because your noting that your a) in biglaw and b) are going back. That solution isn’t everyone’s ideal. (I’ve got 3 young kids and have at this point seen many women associates figure out managing a family or leave the firm—sleep is not something that’s optional).

We made it without sleep training and would never. Just offering this as a counter point. Sleep training isn’t necessary for any family.
Hiring a full time nanny if it is an option.
