How do I handle a prospective freelance client asking for spec work? I have an extensive portfolio specializing in their industry (key art) and I was recommended to them by their previous designer.... Being asked for spec work to "test me out" despite my portfolio and rec always feels like a slap in the face. I might just present a few concept sketches, but not a totally completed piece?

For the folks who do freelance work, do you do more consulting / advisory (get on the phone and talk) or project work (deliverable based work)? What are your thoughts on a platform that focuses on video-conference based advisory work - and not the bid on project type of work?

I recently joined TW some months back and I dont know why I think have made a wrong choice for myself. I am feeling like I am lost. I am not able to fit in in this high expectations environment. I am used to working in a place where we always worked by taking help from others and here it is sort of assumed that we would be knowing everything right from day 1. Also there is no pairing in my project. Any suggestions on what should be done would be welcome.

I have an associate's degree in graphic design and work designing wedding stationery.
