Couldn’t help but respond to this …Stop being so hard on yourself. It happens. Everyone makes a mistake at work at some point. In the grand scheme of things, this is not a big one. It’s hard to advise you without knowing the whole situation with your client, but I would get ahead of it with someone you trust internally. Any client is going to know that internal prices are different from what they charge you. — That’s called running a business. Next time, you will check your attachments more carefully before you send them. Good luck.
Get ahead of it
Oof I’ve been there. I sent a media document with our markup rates in it. Own up to it to your boss and your client, and explain how it won’t happen again. And NEVER do it again because that’s a big mistake.
After I made this mistake, I made sure to double check EVERY attachment I sent - and I still do that 8 years later. It also helps to put a 30 second delay on your emails so you can catch your mistake before it sends… somehow it works.
A digital trail doesn't go away so the idea that it dies with that one email is slim.
How many people were on the email?
How tight are you with the client?
What are the potential implications of them having that information?
All of these questions can impact the likelihood of the information traveling and it being traced back to you.
I've personally received confidential information and sat on it because I didn't want to tank a person's career however I reached out to them and told them I was aware of what they did and warned them to be more careful for their own career growth. I am likely not the norm.
Rule of thumb for me is never forward internal email threads externally. Copy and paste the information in a new thread and drag attachments over as a safety check.
