I’ve seen a few lit associate colleagues leave for product counsel roles in a tech/IP heavy practice. I believe all had some sort of connection at the companies and 4-10 years experience, but that specialized knowledge is what really helps. If you get a chance to dabble in tech trans/regulatory counseling at your firm, that would probably help bolster chances. Lots of fintech product counsel roles these days too if you have done mostly financial work and don’t have that tech connection.
Don’t know that I have seen many lit associates in product counsel roles.
Very interesting! I’ve heard the opposite lol
Depends on the product(s) you'll be working on. Products that are heavily regulated likely will be more appropriate for litigation backgrounds. As a general matter, the most relevant practice areas for product counsel are IP, tech trans and privacy. If you can get litigation experience in IP I think that would help.
