Why do you have to justify doing what you want with your career?

It's easy. In public accounting, they have an Up or Out mentality. In industry, no one forces you to go up or out. If you are happy being a senior , more power to you. I have worked in industry jobs with CPA's who were happy with just being a senior and they were with the firm 10, 15 and 20 years etc. There is nothing wrong with not wanting it all. Don't let anyone ever make you feel as if you are "less worthy" for not wanting it all by not wanting to move up the corporate ladder.

Material things mean little to me..
Justify to whom? Admittedly, I'm lucky, my relatives just know that I do something with computers and numbers and they're not interested beyond that. If you find a position you're content in, that's fine. However, at some point your employer may want to bump you up, so in that sense you may have to explain why you'd rather turn down a promotion.

Justify to whom?? You get to choose. What others think don't matter. Change jobs when and if it suits you.

Why do you have to? Your choice. Some people enjoy what they do and that is what matters.
You don't have to justify it, you can just say it. There are plenty of people who don't want to move up the coporate ladder and that is just fine. Everyone has a place at the end of the day and you have to do what is best for you. If people don't understand that, that is on them.
