I held both at the same time.
Long term, it is not financially advantageous to keep both as they serve the same purpose.
I recommend the PHR. SHRM has established a bad image in recent years due to their response to DEI. Many people have dropped their membership with SHRM over it.
Plus, it feels more commonly mentioned on job postings I see than SHRM-CP. while those has improved over the years, PHR has deep brand power.
I agree... PHR has been around longer and SHRM has a bad rap
I chose PHR because it is more focused on employment law and compliance. SHRM CP is more behavioral and situational focused. I personally wanted the more technical one.
If you can swing it financially, I would suggest covering the cost of the other test and taking both. My employer covered the cost of the SHRM study course and I found that it wasn't much more effort to prepare for the HRCI test. I took it a couple of weeks after the SHRM test while all the content was still fresh in my mind.
I'm curious as well. If I'm going to spend the money, I want it to be worth it.
SPHR
PHR and SPHR are the way to go especially if your employer is paying for it. You can't go wrong gaining a free certification! Use pocketprep to study.
They are like keys to different locks, because some employers want one, and other employers want the other.
Another analogy:
It’s akin to buying two different suits to wear to interviews. Cost-wise, in the same neighborhood for the renewals.
But…
Are there are two sets of laws and policies in the U.S.? Maybe some employers—and their agents—haven’t figured out the total equation.
Are they capable of creating a rational argument for or against each of the two certifications?
What did I miss here?
The work involved to maintain each credential is something to consider. Both require either a substantial amount of time earning PDCs or taking a recertification test. That is in addition to paying out of pocket for the recertification in the future…gets pricey eventually.
Even if am curious as well to know.
