My base loc is Bengaluru, but currently I am not mandatorily required to work from office, and have been working from home since I joined Deloitte in July. Should I talk to my manager and go back to my hometown Kolkata and work from there? Staying in PG all day and working from here is not quite feasible for me. Suggest pls. Deloitte India

“We don’t do a standardized test for it, so why do we offer it?” once argued an Asst Prin. who later became my Prin. and Supt. Yeah, we had a lot of “discussions” and he pretty much killed our music program. He never understood that music is strong PR for the schools. We often have a higher % of participants than any single sport. There are many students who find their belonging in music, and only in music, making this the only place in the school where they: truly experience teamwork, develop close friendships (sometimes leading to marriage!) , learn high expectations, feel the thrill of success and achievement (collectively and individually), develop discipline, understand uniformity and wearing uniforms, survive long bus trips, and have other experiences that will last a lifetime (“This one time, at band camp,…”). Kids in music consistently have higher test scores and generally do better in life after they graduate, regardless of their chosen occupational field. The trick is to teach it to other staff without it looking like self-promotion (teacher promoting self or promoting their own program). Let parents and community leaders be your biggest advocates. Having multiple parents on the school board and other influential areas helps as well. Personally invite staff to concerts to watch the kids you share. It may cost you a favor later, but ask then to help in some way and get them involved. I always offered my principal a seat on a good field trip and asked other staff to go as well. Then suddenly they are talking to kids and bringing it up in the lounge. Easy? No. Quick answer and results? No. It will take time. But you are a master of organizing and herding the cats, getting them to enter a performance stage in a professional manner, and to perform as a unified entity. YOU GOT THIS!!!
