How have any of y'all handled being outcast-ed in challenging co. culture? My performance review had no constructive feedback for me to work with; only just to play ball with the team. When I would give my feedback, it went unheard. I left after pure frustration. Months later, i heard from ex-coworkers, when other co-workers had to fill my position, the same feedback was given and the company adhered to it. I'm not sure how i should receive this info.

Ma’am… I’ve been there and I feel like my response and how common this is for black women professionals deserves a whole podcast episode. 😅😅😅

Use the information you have now as assurance that you weren’t crazy, you know what you are doing, they needed that info but they weren’t in a position to hear and accept it coming from you. Why? We don’t know and that’s for them to sit with not you.

Don’t wallow too much on their why, it doesn’t matter. You no longer work there and now someone else gets to leverage your knowledge and skills.

Take the experience and use it to help you identify what your professional triggers and boundaries are and use that info to learn when and how to advocate for yourself in the future. 🫶🏾

Having hindsight, why does this matter now = You’re no longer there.
✌🏽to your former coworkers and the powers that be who prefer to maintain a toxic culture!
I instinctively don’t know if you would (should) feel validated by this 🍵. I think going forward wherever you land that you look for similarities and ensure you get the feedback you need to succeed in your role!

I’m in the exact same situation, and when I leave, it’ll be the same outcome.

They don’t listen until they have no one willing to work with the team structure or member(s) that is causing the issue. It’s not you.

I did the same as you and quit. As a nurse I have had some bad jobs and I learned what I needed to at that particular organization and moved on.

The first thing to do is realize you can’t get what you do confused with who you are. Your current job is just the “vehicle” to get to where you want to go next. Way too many companies are happy to create “SME’s” of POC that they have no intention of helping or moving anywhere. Instead, they promote and support cross category leads who know enough to manage a group of experts. Their feedback has little to do with you, but instead their own insecurities of knowing what you do and how you do it. So, my answer is: don’t try to control anything but your personal career… and the second your current location stops working for you, start building your next career move. Even plants have to change pots to thrive…
