It’s usually negotiated if they won’t come to the party on salary. You agree on a lower $ amount with the sweetener of a one-off bonus. So you lose nothing if you leave or get a raise after 12 months.
If you’re getting a bonus that you will miss out on my taking the job it’s pretty easy to turn that into a signing bonus.
Instead of signing bonus which is taxed at roughly 50%. You can ask for it to be added on to your salary instead, which will get taxed at your tax bracket (roughly 20-35%).
You can save a chunk of money this way by not giving it straight to taxes, but obviously you do get paid slower since it’s part of salary and not a lump sum like signing bonus.
Yes, I was leaving a few months before a big bonus. I negotiated a stock signing bonus that would vest the amount of my bonus in 6 months.

Yes, many times
Agencies - just asked. One place I converted moving $$ into a bonus because I was local.
I’ve only gotten money for moving. Never got a signing bonus

At every job, even as a junior.
They offered me the job a day after the interview, but I was still looking at other places. The next week, they offered me a signing bonus and I figured that plus the other benefits of the job were worth ending my hunt. No negotiation necessary for me.
