Even if your book is good, your reputation solid, your network helpful, your salary ask reasonable, it can take a really long time. The old rule of thumb was a month for every $10k in salary. So, a highly paid CD might need two years! That said, there are some fundamental mistakes that some people make while searching and in interviews. Those mistakes will make the search longer. Ask for advice and feedback. Keep refining. And keep at it. As the saying goes, “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.” If you are persistent, eventually you get lucky.
It’s not just you. I’m on month 9 of looking. Of course, I’ve ruled out any holding co. shops so that narrows my options quite a bit, but yeah, I’m pretty much over it.
Ugh, it’s hard to find joy in the downtime when you are constantly reading news about layoffs and seeing your friends from the advertising not have a future in it.
There are no rules.
I guess I know that. But was hoping to see how long other took to find comfort or pull an average or call it quits and find a new career.
Don’t say never you might have to toughen it out until Q1 when roles start opening again. So many people in different fields I know have def been interviewing at least a year especially if it’s perm. Right now even freelance is slow. The economy right now. 😇💕
Thank you for that perspective. 💕

How are you making ends meet?
I had a job 8 months out of that year that I was looking. I just wasn’t happy at that workplace. Have been freelancing 2 out of the 4 months and took unemployment for the other two.
But the fear of never having an income again and unemployment running out is real.
You might need to downgrade.
Entirely open to that. But I guess I haven’t applied to ACD/ Sr AD jobs. I could start there.
