2 years. Absolutely worth it; imo it was the right time for me based on where I was at in my life at the time.
There isn’t going to be a time that’s right for everyone. What’s important is whether or not you have the skills to properly serve your client’s needs; the business you can learn, but the job you is what need to know how to do well before you open your own doors.
The hardest part is getting clients. If you dont have a family member who owns an urgent care or is another lawyer with excess cases to refer to you, good luck.
I got lucky because im licensed in multiple states that my firm wasnt licensed in and a family member referred a case that i was able to settle for 275k presuit, no costs. Putting close to $100k in your pocket sure as hell felt better than working for someone for $100k over a year.
This was in year 4 of me being licensed. I now own a firm in 2 states, and work for someone in the third state. When or if I get enough clients I will jump fully, but man its so so so hard to get a constant flow of referrals. $100k sounds nice but if thats all you got for the year, well, $100k isnt much for a family nowdays.
Anyone have suggests on getting clients in the PI/trust/business side would love to hear it.
Six years. Yes. To both questions
3 years, and it was worth it. Even without brining a book of Clients from the firm I left.
