How much criticism is normal. It seems like not a week goes by where a partner or coworker points out deficiency in work. I'm trying but it's like I was supposed to be perfect day one.

Pointing out a deficiency is not the same thing as expecting you to be perfect from day one. It’s just the nature of the job. You don’t know everything. People supervise you who have more experience. They provide corrections so you can learn.

That’s assuming the “criticisms” are about the law. If you’re getting feedback about projects that have typos, etc. than yes. You are expected to be perfect on those things. Or at least strive for perfection.

Try not to take things personally. I’m in my third year of practice, I get criticisms daily from my partner. Some days it’s harder to take than others, and I feel like I’ll never get anything right. Remember that you’re part of a team, and your work product is reflective of the team, so everyone wants to help you improve. Take a deep breath and remember that everyone appreciates that you’re doing your best, and they’re happy to have you.

like

Sounds like you need to learn how to accept and deal with criticism. First two or three years out of LS is where you actually learn anything of value so you'd be better served tucking the ego away and learning from those who care enough to even offer criticism.

like

Lawyers have a bad habit of just pointing to the problems. It’s a common tick in the industry. It doesn’t mean you need to doubt yourself. It doesn’t mean you’re not well liked. It’s just how people expect you to learn. Just remember in a few years to give positive feedback, too.

like

You learn from mistakes and getting feedback. Although its not always good for morale sake, it will make you a better lawyer in the future and you won't make the same mistake twice. Eventually the criticism will lighten up hopefully as you learn and improve. And understand that you won't always get a good job when you actually do great or a pat on the back. Its just the way it is and not only in law. Just set goals for self and check off boxes when you accomplish them to give yourself that self gratification.

During my first year I thought I was incompetent and would get fired most of the days. It gets better. Most ppl get tons of criticism, they just don’t talk about it 🙂. You will improve. Noone expects you to know anything useful until about third year anyway.

When is a content marketing strategy a content marketing strategy? (And not some other kind of strategy)

This may be a dumb question but I really need some clarity here. I bought 12/4 28P on JWN, and I figured they were just going to expire worthless. I got a notification from schwab that due to the fact that is it at or near the money, I have to make sure I have the equity to be assigned or execute the contract. This is just cautionary, I can’t be forced to exercise, right?

Seen Lot of negative comments about KPMG. Any thoughts ?

As I am moving up the ladder, I am finding my executive functioning skills are not able to keep up. Any attorneys here with ADHD/ADD? I was recently diagnosed ADHD, but it was clear I had it my whole life. It did not materially hinder me until law school, and now it’s pretty debilitating as an associate. Since I have been medicated, some executive functioning has been better but it’s really hit or miss. Anyone have any success stories? Would in-house be easier to manage as there is less executive functioning (ie no timekeeping and billing)? I appreciate any response in advance. Thanks!

I’m a new third year associate working at a satellite office of a midsize firm. I feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to truly get good at my job or the multiple areas of law I’m asked to practice. What are some things you’ve done to gain confidence in your practice area?

HELP! I’ve been contacted by a small private security firm who wants me to be their “on call” counsel. They describe it as a lot of contract review, drafting NDAs, etc. but also being there if/when they need to license a vehicle, defend civil suit, etc. It’s overwhelming but sounds like a really great opportunity. I have enough background to be comfortable with contracts and litigation, but don’t want to get myself into a mess. Has anybody else ever had a job like this?

Motions
I work in a midsize firm and we have the basic subscription to westlaw, which doesn’t include the ability to see filed briefs, motions, etc without incurring additional costs. I’m wondering if there is a service in the NJ/PA area that gives you access to previously filed motions and briefs? So if I’m drafting a summary judgment I could search the service and find a similar one. If this doesn’t exist.. I think I found the next million dollar idea lol
